The evening was a memorable occasion as i had the honour to watch a celebrated Russian Pianist (what i thought since he had the surname 'Vladimir') perform the extremely mentally and physically exhausting Piano Concerto No 3 by Rachmaninov. The first two items by the orchestra were merely a formality as the audience braced themselves for this highlight piece at the last.
39 minutes of fast and furious fingers on the piano, complimented by the surprisingly co-operative violins and flutes of the orchestra! How that pianist managed it i don't know, but he certainly looked relaxed as he even had the time to turn to the audience and smile as he played at a rate of 10 to 15 notes per second! At the climax of the piece in the 3rd movement he stood up after he jammed the final chord of the portion and immediately received attention from everybody in the concert hall. My friend told me the melody sounded like some Walt Disney cartoon music. It certainly didnt appear in any cartoon before, but it was part and parcel of the film, "Shine" in 1996.
Went home rather contented that day. heh!
